					Uroflowmetry
Uroflowmetry is a simple, non-invasive test that measures the speed and volume of urine flow during urination. It is commonly used to assess the health and function of the urinary tract, helping to diagnose and monitor conditions affecting urine flow, such as urinary tract obstruction, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), bladder dysfunction, or neurogenic bladder.
During the test, the patient is asked to urinate into a special funnel connected to a measuring device. This device records the rate of urine flow (in milliliters per second) and the total volume of urine produced. The results are represented on a graph showing the flow rate over time, with typical patterns for different conditions. For instance, a weak or prolonged flow may indicate obstruction or reduced bladder function, while an unusually fast flow could suggest stress incontinence or an overactive bladder.
Uroflowmetry is a quick and painless procedure, usually taking only a few minutes. It provides valuable insights for healthcare providers, enabling them to evaluate the function of the bladder and urethra, identify abnormalities, and determine the need for further testing or treatment. Based on the results, additional studies such as cystometry or imaging may be recommended to clarify underlying issues and guide the optimal management approach.
